Coffee or Toffee. What is Your Tone?

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

First things first, let's make it clear that no matter what your favourite hue of choice is, we don't discriminate or aim to complicate the process of deciding what colour to get. All we're bringing you here today is a complete guide into the different tones of coffee-inspired and toffee-influenced hair. Let's go...

What is Toffee Hair?

Surfaced in 2017, and usually 'in-demand' during the September/October holiday season (thank you Halloween...) toffee hair is name after, well... Toffee. It's mainly divided into two main shades: Golden Toffee and Dark Toffee.

Both shades have a brown base in common, however they differ in the tone of highlights you can do. From warm caramels, to a more chocolate vibe, the toffee hair lights up with different techniques depending on the effect you are after. The result? A sweet spin on the crowd-favourite holiday candy resulting in swirl of colour. If you really into toffee shades, you can read more about it here.

What is Coffee Hair?

When it comes to coffee hair colours, we get more variety in terms of shades, but less movement and shape. While toffee hair is characterised by dual tones working together to create movement and depth, usually achieved through global colour and highlights. Coffee shades could be more mono-toned and easy to achieve (think long black, flat white, cappuccino...). However, thanks to the never-ending innovations of the coffee industry, you can get quite diverse coffee-inspired tones that blend hues which create depth and a feeling of movement (think cold brew, caramel latte, blonde roast, pumpkin spice latte, vanilla chai, mocha...). There are no limits to coffee hair, check some examples below!

What is the actual difference between Coffee and Toffee Hair, you may ask.

Well... some may argue that they require different techniques. Others proclaim that it's all about the shades, while there are colourist who strongly dispute any real-life names for colours and stick to the charts numbering of each tone.

The one thing all professionals can agree upon is, regardless of the popular names and descriptions made trendy each year, when you come in for a consultation, bring plenty of inspiration pictures. That is the ultimate description a colourist needs - visual representation of what you want to achieve. Because you don't want to leave the salon like...

See you soon ;)
